9 out of every 10 people have at least minor misalignments in their teeth and jaws. While minor orthodontic issues can often go without treatment (and many people don’t even notice them), others can cause serious dental health problems or insecurities.
If you have misaligned teeth, it might be time for teeth straightening in Los Altos with Boschken Orthodontics.
What can you expect from the teeth straightening process? What are your options, and what will your initial appointment look like? Let’s talk about it!
Read on to learn all about getting your teeth straightened.
First: Your Initial Appointment
Your initial appointment with Dr. Boschken, your orthodontist in Los Altos, will be a consultation. This consultation may or may not lead directly into the teeth straightening process (more on this later). This consultation may be done online or in person.
During the consultation, Dr. Boschken and his assistants will evaluate your current dental situation.
You’ll get x-rays and an iTero scan of your teeth and jaw to make sure that your teeth are healthy and determine what types of orthodontic problems your treatment will be fixing.
If you have healthy teeth, you’ll be able to move forward with treatment. If not, Dr. Boschken, your orthodontist, may want you to improve your oral health to ensure a successful treatment (for example, you may need to get cavities filled before you start treatment).
If your teeth are in good condition and you have a healthy smile, your orthodontist will start working with you on a treatment plan. Dr. Boschken will go over your options and make recommendations for what would be best for you based on your input and preferences.
If you’re unsure, there’s nothing wrong with taking time to decide whether or not orthodontic treatment is right for you at this time. While we recommend starting treatment as soon as possible, you can certainly take time to evaluate your options.
What Are Your Teeth Straightening Options?
Luckily, in 2022 there are plenty of teeth straightening options beyond traditional braces. Many of them are quicker, more efficient, and less visible than older options.
Instead of traditional or ceramic braces, you could try Damon braces or Damon Clear braces. The special wires can move teeth more quickly with less pain, making them a fantastic option. They can handle a wide variety of orthodontic concerns.
Another popular option is Invisalign. Invisalign clear aligners are available for adults, teenagers, and even pre-teens in special cases. Many people prefer them because they’re more subtle than braces and it’s not necessary to modify your diet while you’re in treatment.
What Happens if You Choose Damon Braces?
If you choose Damon braces, it’s possible to start your treatment right away. Dr. Boschken can place the brackets and wires during your consultation appointment.
The orthodontist will place the brackets and special shape memory wire right away. You may feel some small discomfort, but this is normal. Remember, your crooked teeth are moving!
You will have to go to routine appointments with your orthodontist, but you will have fewer appointments than if you chose traditional braces. The memory wire will continue to move your teeth between appointments.
What Happens if You Choose Clear Aligners?
If you opt for Invisalign clear aligners, you will have to wait to start treatment. Don’t worry, though. The wait is worth it.
In the past, an orthodontist would have to take a physical mold of your mouth to send to Invisalign headquarters. Now, however, this is no longer the case. Instead, Dr. Boscken will use a scanner to take a digital impression of your teeth and jaw.
He’ll design your custom treatment plan using Invisalign aligners. You’ll be able to get a general idea of what your results will look like before you even put in your first set of aligners.
In a few weeks, you’ll get your aligners. The number will depend on the specific orthodontic problems that you’re facing.
You’ll switch into a new set of aligners every week. They’ll slowly move your teeth into their new and healthy positions. There my be some discomfort at first, but it should be mild.
While aligners are the least visible conventional orthodontic solution, most people have to wear attachments (and sometimes rubber bands). These help the aligners move your teeth more quickly!
You’ll wear your aligners for 20-22 hours per day. During your appointments with the orthodontist, he’ll check your progress to make sure that no changes need to be made.
How Long Will Teeth Straightening in Los Altos Take?
Many people are anxious to learn how long it will take to straighten their teeth, but unfortunately, there’s no one correct answer.
Treatment times will vary based on several factors. The type of treatment you choose and the severity of your orthodontic condition will dramatically impact how long treatment takes.
If you use clear aligners, your treatment time can also change if you’re not wearing them for as many hours as you should be every day.
The only way to get a clear estimate of the timing and cost is to speak to your orthodontist.
What Are the Benefits of The Teeth Straightening Process?
So why straighten your teeth at all?
When you have straighter teeth, you’ll likely also have healthier teeth. Teeth that are too crowded, for example, are more prone to cavities. This is because it’s difficult to brush and floss between them, so bacteria have room to thrive.
Orthodontic treatment can also improve misaligned bites. Bite issues can lead to problems with eating, a lopsided jaw, and even cracked or chipped teeth.
Even if your crooked teeth or misaligned bite isn’t impacting your dental health, you may still feel self-conscious. Getting braces or aligners is also great for your self-esteem.
